Mad Men: Thinking about the Text

  1. Heather's main insight about Mad Men is that its reflects today's society. In paragraph ten of the reading Heather explains how Mad Men is a perfect commodity of the American life, through its way of portraying the most stereotypical American looks, wants, and desires(H174).
  2. Havrilesky establishes her authority by stating things like, "Mad Men captures this ultra-mediated, postmodern moment, underscoring the disconnect between the American dream and reality by distilling our deep-seated frustrations as a nation into painfully palpable vignettes.
  3. She appeals to the readers emotions by stating things that are painfully true about todays society. In paragraph one of this reading she says "Slowly we come to view our own lives as inconsequential, grubby, even intolerable"(pg.170 paragraph 1). She then goes on to explain the American dream, and how it has become less attainable than ever.
  4. I now understand that Mad Men is about life in the 1960's and how it reflects the American dream so perfectly. I'm going to start watching this show because i want to see how I can relate to it, and also to see what life was like in the 1960's.
